Plant Based Medicine with @drmonavand

While enjoying amazing salads in the tranquil space of Unplug Meditation, we hosted an incredible event with Dr. Mona Vand, who touts (and is physical proof!) of the benefits of living a plant-based lifestyle.

Unlike your typical pharmacist, Mona preaches that medication should secondary to diet, exercise and mindset.  While she understand and values the benefits of some medication, she believes, these medications without first making fundamental changes in your lifestyle, are often over prescribed and not looking at the real root of the problem. Here are some of our favorite tips she shared:

Don’t obsess. Eat as plant based as possible, but don’t get discouraged over the times you eat meat or dairy. Don’t count macronutrients or calories like crazy, just be aware of what you’re putting into your body and focus on real, whole foods.

Take a micronutrient test. If you want to know what is going on with your body, Dr. Mona Vand suggestions taking a micronutrient test to see where you may be nutrient deficient and add in supplements as necessary, based on test results.

Forget cheat days. It’s all about listening to your body. If you’re craving pasta, have it!

Take care of your skin. Always wear sunscreen, avoid the sun, drink tons of water and eat a plant-centric diet.

Fruit is A-OK. It’s great for you! The best fruits to eat are berries—they’re loaded with antioxidants and are great for your skin. Dr. Vand suggests having fruit in the morning with breakfast or on an empty stomach.

Try tongue scraping. Done first thing in the morning, tongue scraping is an amazing practice. The white coating on your tongue is really toxins that your body tries to get rid of while you sleep.
