Diversity in wellness is something that we feel strongly is important to explore and shed light on. We built our entire company on the premonition that EVERYONE is worthy of wellness. Why is it, therefore, that so much of the wellness industry seems to be catering to only a few, rather than the masses?
We sat down with Chinae Alexander, Minna Lee, Bree Branker, and Latoya Shauntay Snell to discuss their perspectives on the privilege of wellness. Chinae kicked off the lecture by reading excerpts from an article titled Smash the Wellness Industry- a recent expose on on the imbalances prevalent in the industry.
We learned so many things from each of these women, as they've each come from different backgrounds and have developed unique points of view when it comes to the wellness industry.
Here are some of the top takeaways we wanted to share with you:
Redefine and reclaim your own wellness. What do you want it to be? Chinae defined wellness as “Doing the best that you can for your mind, body and spirit with the resources that you have” and we totally agree!
Wellness is not being obsessed with the scale. Pictures can only tell one side of the story.
You don’t have to have wealth to be well. Things like taking a bath or getting out into nature are easy and inexpensive ways to take time and take care of yourself.
Our stories and where we come from, shape our views of wellness. Expand your ideas of wellness beyond your own viewpoint!
Consumers have a lot of power. Encourage and support brands that embrace diversity and question the status quo.
Be proactive to expand beyond your circles. Spend time outside your communities.
